Thomas and Stacy Garrett, of Hutchinson, have an unusual sideline business. When they moved to their current home a few years ago, they inherited a field of peony bushes—about 1200 of them! The Garretts sell the blooms mostly through florists but also have a few on-farm customers. Peak bloom time is mid-May. In the fall they sell bushes ready to plant. When I asked for tips on growing peonies, Thomas told me that they like to be planted in groups and they should not be planted deeper than about one inch.
