Courage
February 2023 Character Core
When we think of acts of courage, the first image that comes to mind is often that of someone totally overpowered yet pushing forward to conquer the enemy or adverse circumstance in front of him. Courage might very well look like the triumphant conqueror. But courage can also look like choosing to show kindness to a friend, co-worker, or sibling despite knowing that their rejection is possible. Courage can look like refusing to compromise on the convictions you hold. Courage can look like waking up each day and choosing to be joyful and content even though circumstances aren’t positive.
You might one day be asked to show courage against a physical foe. But be assured, many opportunities to demonstrate consistent, small acts of courage in your daily life. Instead of viewing these opportunities as bother or an imposition, embrace them as a way to show kindness, compassion, patience, and humility to those around you.
“Without courage, we cannot practice any virtue with consistency. We can’t be kind, true, merciful, generous, or honest.” – Maya Angelou
