Alertness
August 2023 Character Core
Meriam Webster states that being alert means “a state of careful watching and readiness especially for danger or opportunity.” Alertness is very important in our day-to-day lives. Many accidents and injuries have happened due to people not being alert. The opposite can also be said. Alertness has also saved many lives and prevented many injuries from happening. It is important to be alert at our jobs, at home, and on the road.
We all lead incredibly busy lives, which can lead us to not always being very alert. Below are some tips from salemhealth.org on what to do when you are feeling tired and having a hard time staying alert:
- Get up and move around to feel awake.
- Take a nap.
- Give your eyes a break from screen time.
- Eat a healthy snack.
- Start a conversation with someone.
- Switch tasks to stimulate your mind.
- Drink water.
- Go outside.
- Do some exercise and move around.
- When driving, pull over when sleepy.
All these things will help us stay alert. The Bible also talks about the importance of staying alert. In Ephesians, Paul tells the church to “put on the full armor of God.” Ephesians 6:18 says, “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” Let’s remember to be alert in everything that we do!
